wood wine bottle holder
Help with explaining a science fair project?

We have a wine bottle holder that my 5th grade daughter is wanting to use for the science fair. Here is my best description. It is a 12″ piece of wood that is about 3 1/2″ wide and 1″ thick. There is a 2″ hole cut into it at an angle about 3″ from the top. Along each end the same angle is cut on the edge…… when a ( full or empty ) wine bottle …. any bottle really, is placed in the slot it is suspended parallel to the ground while the wood is at about a 135* angle. I know it is the angle of the hole and the edges and the weight of the bottle pressing down and distributes the weight evenly on the edge…. OK. My question is this…… How can we describe what is going on here to make it sound as though we really know what is going on. I understand it and what it is doing, but how can we explain it better??? Thanks in advance.

You’re dealing with the phenomenon of “center of gravity”.

When the wine bottle is placed in the holder, the bottle-plus-holder has a combined center of gravity that is reasonably centered over the flat part of the holder that rests on the table. The “foot” of the holder is flat so as to resist tipping because the combined system’s center of gravity is almost certainly *not* directly over the foot.

The hole is angled only so that the bottle stays relatively parallel to the table. The top of the holder (which doesn’t rest on the table) is cut at an angle only to make it look good– it doesn’t matter what shape that end is.

Because the wine is liquid, it will distribute itself in the horizontal wine bottle and the center of gravity of the empty-bottle-plus-holder will be in almost exactly the same place as the full-bottle-plus-holder. If the foot of the holder were rounded, you would find that the holder wants to be at a different angle with the full bottle than with the empty one– maybe even enough to tip it over.

You can experiment with this by concentrating the weight in the *bottom* of the bottle. Drop a bunch of marbles into an empty wine bottle, then squirt in a bunch of hot glue or epoxy so they are stuck in the bottom. Let it dry. Probably you will find that the bottle no longer balances in the holder– the center of gravity stays too far away from the top of the bottle.

Have fun with it.
