Wine Tours Around the World

Do you love wine? Why not take your passion global with an international wine tour? Winemaking is an art that unites different countries and cultures across the world, but some regions are more renowned for it than others. Here are 5 of the best places to go on a wine tour:

Italy – Wine is everywhere in Italy, whether you’re sipping a fine Chianti in Tuscany or Nero d’Avila in Sicily. Here, you can combine tours of vineyards with tours of ancient Greek and Roman ruins, fine art, breathtaking scenery and delicious Italian food.

France- With big names like Bordeaux and Champagne, it’s easy to see why France is the most famous wine-producing country in the world. Churning out 7 to 8 billion bottles of the good stuff each year, it’s also the world’s largest wine producer. Alsace is notable for its white wines, while Bordeaux is famous for reds. It may seem counter-intuitive given the name, but Burgundy is actually known for both reds and whites. Champagne, obviously, is the place to go to get your bubbly fix.

Australia- Australia may be notorious for unleashing legions of cheap-but-mediocre “animal wines” with pictures of animals on the bottles. But there’s much more to Australia’s wine industry than kangaroos and koalas. Australia has been making high-quality wine for centuries. In fact, according to Wikipedia, “At the 1873 Vienna Exhibition the French judges, tasting blind, praised some wines from Victoria, but withdrew in protest when the provenance of the wine was revealed, on the grounds that wines of that quality must clearly be French.”

Chile- The wine industry in Chile is still young, but not so young that you won’t find great wine here. In fact, Chilean wines place in international tasting competitions along with their European counterparts. The best place to tour vineyards in Chile is in the Zona Central.

South Africa- South Africa has been making wines since the 17th century. The best base for touring the wineries here is Cape Town. Wine tourism has been growing in prominence recently, and many wineries offer enticing “extra” activities like horseback riding, game drives and picnics.

As you plan your trip, remember to give yourself enough time to get a passport if you don’t already have one. The process takes about 6 weeks, and about 3 weeks even if you pay an additional $60 for expedited service. If you have travel plans and need it sooner than that, apply in person at a regional passport agency or use a private expediting company like RushMyPassport.
