How do I Properly Drill and Hang Items on Concrete Walls?

Hello everyone, I apologize about the naive question here but I this past weekend I moved into an apt with concrete walls. This is the first time I have lived somewhere that didn’t have Plaster, Sheetrock, or Drywall walls. I would like to hang some items from the walls (such as a wine rack, a tapestry, and a shelving unit) but am unsure how to drill into concrete. I have a set of concrete drill bits and a powered drill but don’t know what to do next. Is drilling into concrete similar to drilling into wood in the sense that I drill a smaller hole then the screw so the threads catch? Is their a special type of plug I am supposed to purchase?

Using a new 1/8″ masonry bit in my $50 corded DeWalt worked like butter. Unfortunately I do not own an extension cord so I was only able to drill one hole with it. I have a cordless Ridgid compact 18v li ion drill that I was hesitant to use since the owner’s manual does not mention using that drill for masonry.

Well it definitely took longer and there was a decent amount of vibration in the drill but it sure got the job done. I also allowed the bit a decent amount of time between drilling to cool down which I highly recommend. Safety goggles are a definite necessity as well.

Bottom line: don’t be nervous drilling into concrete as long as you have a decent masonry bit (multiple of the same size if you don’t want the downtime between holes). A hammer drill is not a necessity.

For concrete walls you will need a masonry drill bit and a power drill, and those expanding plastic wall anchors (with screws) that match your drill bit. Time consuming, but with a little creativity you can avoid having to drill a hole for each picture!

If your pictures are framed and you want to hang a cluster of them, you can mount a long rod to the wall (like a curtain rod, but closer to the wall) about a foot down from the ceiling with the masonry screws, then use picture wire to hang an arrangement of framed pictures from that.
