Is it better to book with a travel agent or the cruise line directly?

I’ve book right on Carnival.com for my last 2 cruises but now I hear travel agents can get you free stateroom upgrades, free stuff onboard like wine, and even shipboard credit. I always figured travel agents just got people good rates by giving them a room in the crappiest location on the ship (because of course when you book with a travel agent you book a cruise, when you book on Carnival you select your stateroom number)

I was wondering how exactly they go about getting you all this extra stuff and good rates?. Carnival’s good past guest program doesn’t start until after your 11th cruise so for my next 9 cruises all I’m getting is a gold S&S card and the “past guest discount” which I bet is just like $20 off since it’s still expensive.

I always book all of my travel through my local travel agent, who does a wonderful job for me! There is NO COST to me, and she is able to find the lowest fares, which always meet and occasionally are lower than anything I have ever found on any of the “discount cruise” web sites. She handles air fare, hotels, transfers, and insurance for me, too. (By the way, not all trip insurance is the same, so be sure to get the coverage YOU need, not just what a cruise company might offer.) As to the little extras, many travel agents will have a bottle of wine sent to you at dinner, or a basket of fruit, or a shore excursion coupon or two, etc. Travel agents can help you with any complications that arise, and are excellent help in filing a claim for the insurance in the event you have to cancel. As to looking to their commission as the first priority, that is not true. A travel agent works to get you the best value and the best travel experience, knowing that if you have a great time, you will come back for other travel and tell your friends, too. Personally, I wouldn’t travel without going through my travel agent!
