What is a good holiday destination in Cyprus?

We are looking for a holiday in the beautiful island of Cyprus. We have a teenager and a child, my husband and I. We love beach holidays with great swimming and snorkelling, but not crowded resorts like Ayia Napa. We like it to be tourist friendly in a way, but we also love local charm, great food and wine and preferably good 4 or 5 star hotels. I do not really know Cyprus so please could somebody enlighten me?

You would probably be better off considering Protaras at the eastern end of the island. Protaras is a great, family friendly resort, with plenty to do for both of your kids. Most of the hotels are situated along the shoreline of some great sandy beaches; Flamingo Bay, Fig Tree Bay for example, and just a short drive away; Firemans Beach, and Konnos Bay; just a short drive away from Protaras, both great little coves, perfect for snorkelling.Also, Protaras has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants, all within easy walking distance of the hotels. But, please, don’t dismiss Agia Napa…….this too has some wonderful sandy beaches, and some great bars and restaurants, well away from The Square, where all of the clubs are situated. here are some really charming, quaint little tavernas, tucked away from the busy tourist areas. ‘Napa is just a short bus ride/ taxi ride/ drive away from Protaras.

Also, ‘Napa has one of the largest waterparks in Europe…..great for a day away from the beach, and plenty to keep the kids entertained. Check with your hotel, or pick up a Cyprus Mail; they often have discount vouchers for the waterpark.

Bring a small amount of Euros out with you; enough to last your first couple of days, then change he rest of your money at any of he little exchange kiosks along the tourist strip in Protaras ( Check first that they do not charge commission) You will find that you get a better rate of exchange than in the U.K.

Do check with your agent that your hotel is actually in the main part of Protaras;many class Pernera as ‘Protaras’, but this is a much quieter resort, and is actually about a mile away!

I live just fifteen minutes away from Protaras….this is one of my favourite areas…one of my reasons for coming to live here!
