The Difference between a Wine Cellar and a Wine Bottle Refrigerator

There is a big difference between a wine bottle refrigerator that you would buy for your kitchen and an actual refrigerated wine cellar. Real wine cellars are often dug so deeply that they don’t really need to be refrigerated. Regardless of whether or not a real wine cellar is cooled artificially or naturally, it will still be more likely to have consistent light, humidity, and temperature than a wine fridge. If you just want to keep a few bottles of wine on hand for drinking within a period of a few months, a wine bottle fridge is a good idea, but it is not a long term solution.

When you choose a wine storage cooler, keep temperature in mind. This is very important. The thermoelectric method and the compressor method are the two primary techniques for cooling. To avoid vibration problems and maintain a consistent temperature, you will want a thermoelectric refrigerator. This type of fridge does not have moving parts. However, they don’t really keep things cool as well as wine bottle refrigerators, which are compressor based. The difference is that a compressor will cycle up and down. This causes the temperature inside to fluctuate inappropriately. Thus, both choices have some flaws as far as addressing temperature goes.

Even though wine bottle refrigerators may be advertised as having humidity control, this is not always as true as one might wish. The truth is that manufacturers have not been able to completely solve the problem with humidity so far. Some have tried, but their attempts have not produced reliable results. It is pretty to look at your bottles of wine through the door of a glass fronted cabinet; however, the light may be harming your wine. If a white wine is stored in a clear bottle, it will have an especially strong tendency to deteriorate. UV light can damage wine pretty quickly. That is why it is important to buy a wine refrigerator that has a tinted glass door. Be sure the tint blocks UV rays.

There are a lot of problems with storing wine in this manner. That is why you will find strong cautions against drawing comparisons between a real wine cellar and a wine bottle refrigerator. www.modernwinecellar.com and other review sites are quite clear about this. You can keep wine in a real wine cellar for a very long time; however, you must not keep wine in a wine refrigerator for more than one year. These sort of appliances don’t have a life of more than 5 years, so this is very good advice. A wine bottle refrigerator is good for keeping a few bottles of wine ready to drink, but a genuine wine cellar is the best solution for long term storage of fine wine.
