Carnival in Roses, Costa Brava

Nestled right up close to the French-Spanish border is the charming seaside town of Roses. It lies on the Gulf of Roses, in northern Catalonia, and has had a varied history, as it shifted from French to Spanish hands. But the wonderful natural setting, and the naturally wonderful climate, have combined to make this one of the more popular tourist destinations of the Costa Brava. A lot of tourists book an apartment Costa Brava. If you want to enjoy the carnival, book also your Costa Brava apartment in Roses.

That, in turn, has transformed its yearly carnival into the epic week-long Carnival of Roses, watched by upwards of 50,000 people. This March, you too, can share in the hundreds-years old traditions of Carnestoltes (or Lent).

The Catalan people, and the Spanish in general, always make the most of this time of year because it marks the last time that they can partake of various foods, including meat, before the 40 days of frugal eating that mark Lent. So what better way to mark that sombre period than to go out with style, and start a carnival? As elsewhere, Carnival in Roses is marked by processions and floats, gifts and feasts; but here everything is done on a large scale, with up to 6,000 people involved in some of the processions.

If you come to spend you holiday in Costa Brava apartment in Roses in March, you will be able to enjoy the carnival of Roses.

This year’s event starts on Thursday the 3rd of March 2011, when the elected King Carnestoltes marks his arrival in style. At 10pm, the town’s residents will be ready to receive him at the Plaça Frederic Rahola, in a blaze of drumming from his steel band. Speeches will be orated, and dances danced, as the steel band continues through the night.

The next day, the 4th of March 2011, the so-called Dawn of the Carnival will be welcomed with displays from the Compañía de la Ciutadella – the company of the citadel. Roses is overlooked by a magnificent set of fortifications, dating back 500 years to when Turkish pirates raided these lands. The modern-day Catalonian militias, or Miquelets, will descend from the Citadel, proudly displaying their muskets and canons.

Parades will follow for the rest of the afternoon, and there is traditionally gift-giving by the carnival committee, of cookies and sweet wine, to spectators. The day will be rounded off with an evening of music and costumed dancing. On Saturday the 5th, it is the children’s turn to parade in their costumes, and the children’s King and Queen are proclaimed.

It doesn’t stop there – Sunday sees more parades, floats and dancing, with the adult King and Queen centre of attention, and more late night festivities. Finally, Monday the 7th marks the end of the Carnival; first there is a slap-up communal paella by the beach; then comes a sombre bookend to days of festivities. The mock-funeral of the Sardine is a ‘serious’ time of faux-mourning, as the coffin is processed through town, to much wailing. On it’s burial, there is time for one last ball, before Lent is swept in.

Book as soon as possible your Costa Brava apartment to enjoy the Carnival in Roses.
