What’s the proper way to air out a bottle of red wine?
I have a decanter with a wide base. I poured the Berberana Number One Shiraz/Tempranillo 2005 into it and still have the top off of it. Should I cover the decanter or leave it open and for how long? AND, what’s the purpose of doing this anyway!?!?
Leave the top off for about half an hour or so. The purpose of this is to get oxygen in contact with the wine, which changes the flavor profile subtly and releases aroma. This is typically called breathing.
