Is it ok to refrigerate an unopened bottle of wine for a long time?

We have a standard normal bottle of merlot in our refrigerator. It is unopened and has been in there a long time. We are thinking of giving it away as a gift. I’m thinking that all this time we should just have had it in a darkened cabinet or on a counter out of direct sunlight and not refrigerated??

It won’t have affected it too much. If you think about an old French chateau (where cellaring wine was first really done) their normal temperatures are in the 40′s, not nearly as warm as our insulated homes of today.

How long is a long time? If it’s less than 5 years, it shouldn’t be a big deal at all.
