Can you get personalised bottles of scotch in Australia?

ten wedding anniversary is coming thinking of gifts and was wondering if you can get personalised bottles of scotch like you can with wine – if so were?

Not really. A bottle with any kind of custom label is going to have to go through customs on its own, since you can’t normally alter the labeling of spirits after importation but before sale. That will take a lot of time, and would be inconvenient for the bottler/distributor unless you were ordering a bunch (and I mean a couple of cases).

Additionally, I don’t know about Australia but in the US the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms MUST approve any labeling on any alcoholic beverage sold commercially in the United States over state lines or from outside the country. This is a rather bureaucratic process that involves paying a processing fee, and would make it even more difficult for the bottler to do custom labels. It would somewhat surprise me if other countries were as officious about alcohol as the US, but then again I’ve also heard that the Australian government is rather bone-headed about these things too.

It’s not entirely out of the question, though I’ve only heard of it being done once, and that was in the case of a wealthy Indian businessman ordering an entire cask of Glenlivet bottled to celebrate his son’s wedding. If you’re rolling in dough you can go this route.

However, even if you aren’t a millionaire, you do have a few options. One is to make labels yourself or get do-it-yourself custom wine labels, and use that. If you’re careful or can get a pro graphic designer to do it, it can look pretty good.

The next option is to just get a regular bottle of scotch (something ten years old, I hope) and a pair of brandy or sherry tasting glasses with a message etched onto them. The glasses might run you a pretty penny, and you’d need to do it a bit in advance, but they’d also be a really neat keepsake.

The third option is to travel to the UK and get it done in person. This avoids export/import issues, but it may be kind of a crap shoot to just show up in the UK and ask for it done. Maybe have someone you know who lives or works there arrange it for you, and then go and pick it up.
